Day-Long Retreat:
Introduction to Right Concentration –The Jhanas
Saturday, September 10th
9:00 am – 9:00 pm
with
Leigh Brasington
About This Saturday Retreat
This unique daylong course will provide an introduction to the Jhanas (the Meditative Absorptions), which are a method of one-pointed concentration taught in Theravada Buddhism. The course will cover what exactly the Jhanas are, how the Buddha intended them to be used, and a brief introduction to how one goes about entering these states. No one should expect to learn or even experience a deep Jhana state during such a short course- a longer retreat is usually needed for this. But this course will provide a detailed overview and will include time for meditation when the basic instructions can be tried out.
This is a unique opportunity to deepen your meditation practice. Don’t miss this opportunity.
Supper will be provided on Saturday evening.
Please bring your own lunch.
Participants are encouraged to attend Leigh’s talk on the Friday evening prior to this day, titled “Understanding is the First Step: Buddha’s Teachings on Right View/RightUnderstanding.”

About Leigh’s Book
The Buddhist jhanas—successive states of deep focus or meditative absorbtion–demystified. A very practical guidebook for meditators for navigating their way through these states of bliss and concentration.
One of the elements of the Eightfold Path the Buddha taught is Right Concentration: the one-pointedness of mind that, together with ethics, livelihood, meditation, and so forth, leads to the ultimate freedom from suffering. The Jhanas are the method the Buddha himself taught for achieving Right Concentration. They are a series of eight successive states, beginning with bliss and moving on toward radically nonconceptual states. The fact that they can usually be achieved only during prolonged meditation retreat tends to keep them shrouded in mystery. Leigh Brasington is here to unshroud them. He takes away the mystique and gives instructions for them in plain, accessible language, noting the various pitfalls to avoid along the way, and then providing a wealth of material on the theory of jhana practice–all geared toward the practitioner rather than the scholar.
