Building an Enlightened Society: The Sangha Jewel and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beloved Community

with Rev. Alan Senauke

April 13th, 14th & 15th, 2018

Shakyamuni Buddha’s practice community flourished on principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity, long before they were articulated in the French Revolution. Dr. King’s Beloved Community reflects similar values. Theirs are visions where our differences are recognized, accepted, and included; where conflict is resolved without violence and fear. How do we raise up such a vision, and what does our daily Buddhist practice have to do with it?

Friday night is open to the public as a stand-alone event for a suggested donation of $15.

About Hozan Alan Senauke

From the Berkeley Zen Center (BZC) website:

Alan or Hozan (his dharma name) established his practice as a student of Sojun  Roshi in the early1980s. He was ordained at BZC in1989 and received Dharma Transmission from  Sojun Roshi at Tassajara in1998. He has been Tanto or Head of Practice at BZC since 1997, and was installed as BZC’s Vice Abbot in 2007.

Hozan brings a global perspective on socially-engaged Buddhism and Zen as a force for positive change. Since 1991 Alan has been a leader at Buddhist Peace Fellowship. More recently he has founded the Clear View Project, bringing  Buddhist-based resources and support where it is needed around the world.

Hozan was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1947.  He is a writer and editor, a social justice activist, and a respected folk musician. Alan has been a resident  at Berkeley Zen Center for more than 25 years. He and his wife Laurie have raised their two children, Silvie and Alex, at BZC.

Payment covers costs of putting on the retreat. Additional dana for Alan is encouraged.
