Buddhism and the ecological challenge

with visiting author and Zen teacher

David R. Loy

Friday, October 20- Sunday October 22

The ecological crisis – which includes global warming but is much bigger than that – is the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced. What does Buddhism offer that can help us understand and respond appropriately? And what does ecological crisis mean for how we understand and practice Buddhism (or any spiritual path) today? Among other things, we will reflect together on the parallels between our perennial individual predicament (according to Buddhism) and our collective predicament today. What does this all imply about how we understand the bodhisattva path? What does it mean to be an “ecosattva”?

The Friday evening talk is also open to the general public.  All are welcome.

David Loy speaks with the mind of a scholar and the heart of a bodhisattva. His work has placed him in the vanguard of the worldwide Ecodharma movement. Through books, lectures and meditation retreats he shows us how we may integrate our personal path of spiritual awakening with the environmental path of radical change. He helps us understand that by wisely engaging with the climate change controversies we are developing a spiritual strength that can transform our personal predicaments and liberate us from suffering. David’s message spans the breath of human culture to bring us up to date on what may be the greatest challenge in history: the socio-ecological crisis.
