SUMMARY:Give Big Gallatin Valley!
DESCRIPTION:A Community Day of Giving\nThursday May 1\, 6 PM – Friday May 2\, 6 PM\nWe’re excited to participate again in Give Big Gallatin Valley\, our local day of giving hosted by One Valley Community Foundation. In addition to the Bozeman Dharma Center\, please consider giving to other nonprofits who have complementary missions like Montana Mindfulness Project and The Compassion Project. Together we can make the world a more grounded\, loving place. \nAs we make our yearly budget\, we count on donations during Give Big to cover basic organizational needs including all the tasks that our staff take care of. This year we hope to raise $13\,000 to pay for Michãel and Erin to market our programs\, plan for the future\, and keep the BDC running smoothly.  We are so grateful to them for all that they do–please give them a shout out the next time you see them! \nIf we can surpass the $13\,000 goal\, we will put any additional funds to BDC technological and facility upgrades. The BDC board and staff are intentional with your donations and have been good at figuring out ways to operate on a shoe-string budget and make things last. Unfortunately\, we’ve recently been having trouble with the website (originally designed in 2013!) and we will need to change platforms and redesign the site. Michãel’s laptop is on its last hinges (literally)\, and if possible\, we’d like to improve the lighting\, to make our space more inviting. \nThese improvements will allow us to: \n✅ Equip our staff and volunteers with the technology they need to do their work efficiently \n✅ Effectively spread the word about our unique center with a newly updated website \n✅ Create a more welcoming and comfortable practice space \nAll gifts make a difference! Thanks for your continuing support!

SUMMARY:Koans with Michael Smith
DESCRIPTION:Koans can show up in multiple ways. They can be healing stories\, conversations\, poems\, fragments of song. Technically\, koan is a Japanese term that refers to a legal public case. In Zen\, koans are designed to give us pause\, to enter deeply our own “case”\, revealing how we look at the world.  During several short periods of meditation\, we will sit with a koan in the form of a phrase\, a story\, or a poem. There will be walking meditation and time after each koan to consider together. All are welcome\, no previous experience with koans is necessary. Offered by the Bozeman Zen Group and Michael Smith.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness and the Addiction Economy with Dave Smith
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nThursday\, March 27 6:30-8 PM\nMindfulness is everywhere\, everyone seems to know what it means and maybe that’s the problem. While mindfulness maintains deep roots in the Buddhist tradition\, like many things it has been watered down by the mainstream and is close to ruin. While our devices have become weapons of mass distraction\, the attention economy is over\, we lost\, welcome to the addiction economy. Everyone is addicted\, we all know it\, but few will admit it\, yet we all seem to accept it. Turning inward and taking an honest look at our pain and dissatisfaction and coming to terms with what fuels are addiction is our only hope. This is accomplished through the development of mindfulness. Therefore\, mindfulness is the means\, not the end. \nDuring the evening session\, Dave will offer perspectives on how to use our mindfulness as skillfully as we can! All Welcome!

SUMMARY:The Noble Search with Chaim Bryski
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 15\n11AM – 4:30 PM\nWhile myths and legends abound surrounding the life of the historical Buddha (Pāli: Siddhattha Gotama; Skt: Siddhārtha Gautama)\, much of the traditional folklore began appearing only centuries after the Buddha’s lifetime. Yet the earliest Buddhist discourses (as collected in the Pāli Canon and its Chinese and Sanskrit parallels)\, focused as they are on the content of his teachings\, contain no comprehensive biography of the Buddha. \nRather\, scattered throughout these many thousands of discourses\, we find numerous snippets of autobiographical narrative attributed to the Buddha himself. In these first-person accounts\, often shared with his audiences for didactic purposes\, the Buddha recounts a number of his own early-life experiences on his path to awakening\, as a means of imparting some of the hard-won lessons and insights he gained over the course of his personal struggles and breakthroughs. \nDuring this daylong study and practice program\, we will examine a number of these ancient texts\, explore their practical lessons and insights\, and discuss and reflect upon their relevance and application to our own lives. \nTo enhance our exploration of the texts\, the day will also incorporate short dharma talks and guided meditation practices\, as well as periods of group discussion\, peer-based dialogue\, and personal reflection. \n*Please note that all participants will receive a collection of the relevant texts we will be exploring. Hard copies of the material will be available to those attending in-person at the Bozeman Dharma Center\, while those joining online will receive a digital PDF copy via email.” \n \nAbout Chaim: \nChaim is a Dharma teacher\, mindfulness instructor\, and trauma practitioner. Integrating Buddhist teachings & practices with modern healing modalities\, his approach is fueled by a deep curiosity about what it means to be human — mentally\, emotionally\, somatically\, and relationally — and how we can tap into and expand our innate capacities for healing\, growth\, and connection to live more authentic\, meaningful lives.

SUMMARY:Poetry from Emptiness with Kerry Neal
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 16\n2:30-3:30 PM\nA small group is sitting in silence.\nSomeone claps their hands and\nspeaks a line of poetry.\nMore silence until\na responding line of poetry arises\nin the mind of another\nwho then claps their hands\nand speaks that line.\nReturn to empty mind.\nContinue. \n\nPoetry from Emptiness is a technique from the Daoist literary tradition of China. It promotes creative friendship through shared verbal images and the pleasure of just quietly sitting in tranquility. \n\nNo right\, no wrong\njust thoughts that continue\na cascade of images. \n\nYou do not have to think of yourself as a poet to enjoy Poetry from Emptiness. You only need to be open\, curious\, contemplative and spontaneous. Poetry from Emptiness is not based on a philosophy or religion. It only requires a mind empty of preconceptions.
