The Metaphor of Fire

BIC Guest: Dave Smith

Thursday
November 20

6:30 – 8 PM
Online

In early Buddhist thought- greed, hatred, and confusion are expressed as the three fires. These fires symbolize the process of craving, clinging, and fueling which encompasses the entirety of the second noble truth.  Greed and hatred may appear obvious, but confusion, also translated as delusion and ignorance (moha) is much more complex, sneaky, and vastly misunderstood in consequence and translation. Often taught as the root causes of suffering it misses the bigger message of the Dharma. The metaphor of fire does not simply indicate that which causes suffering, but rather that which entraps us, enslaves the mind, keeping us bound-up in self-deception and self destruction. During this event Dave will discuss the important and often misrepresented message of these early ideas within the early Buddhist teachings.
